Serena Williams refused to discuss her good friend Meghan Markle's split from the Royal Family. Meghan and Prince Harry made the bombshell decision to step away from their senior positions a fortnight ago.
Meghan has been a regular supporter of Williams, attending many of her matches at the US Open and Wimbledon.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner did not face the media ahead of her Australian Open campaign, which is unusual for a top-level player.
But after getting off to a winning start with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Anastasia Potopova in the first round this morning, Williams was given no respite in her press conference.
Before any of her match action was discussed she asked about 'Megxit'.
"I have absolutely no comments on anything with that," Williams replied. "But good try. You tried. You did good."
Australian Open poll: Who will win the 2020 Australian Open? Vote now
Williams is hoping to equal Margaret Court's Grand Slam record of 24 at the Australian Open over the next two weeks.
The American has lost two finals - at the US Open and Wimbledon - since giving birth to her daughter Olympia.
But she is hoping to use the motivation of catching Court to motivate her in Melbourne.
Williams added: I think it's factored a lot into my game, and now it's just more or less about doing the best that Serena Williams can do.
"Margaret Court was a wonderful, great champion. And now how great is Serena Williams?
"That's it. That's kind of what I have been thinking about the last couple of weeks and months. It definitely helps me relax a lot."
The tennis legend also discussed the air pollution which has been a hot topic at the Australian Open.
Several qualifiers were furious after being made to play their matches in 'hazardous' conditions last week due to the smoke caused by the devastating bushfires.
Fortunately, the air has been clear for the past few days but Williams is still worried for her own health.
"I definitely was concerned, and am," the 38-year-old explained. "I think it changes every day.
"There is a lot of factors on how it can change. That is still a concern for, I think, pretty much everyone.
"Every day all the players and the tournament make sure that all the players are updated on what the play conditions would be like.
"You know, every single day we get updates. That's been really good to see that the Australian Open take that stance on that.
"So, yeah, it's literally every day, we are just waiting every day to see how the air quality would be."
