Gillian Anderson appeared on The One Show tonight (January 20) to discuss all about new Netflix series, Sex Education. Gillian also spoke to hosts Alex Jones and Matt Baker about playing Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming series of The Crown as well as delving into anecdotes about her teenage years. While the questions may have seemed innocent enough, BBC viewers quickly branded the interview “awkward” as Gillian had a rather resigned response to one of Alex’s questions.
Alex and Matt quizzed Gillian over her time on the second season of Netflix series Sex Education.
Gillian plays Jean Milburn in the hit series, a sex therapist and mother to teenage lead character Otis (played by Asa Butterfield).
As such, the conversation soon turned to what life was like as a teenager for Gillian herself.
Alex began to probe and asked: “You know, there are lots of rebellious teens in it, and we read a bit about your background, Gillian.”

Alex said: “Can we tell the story about the superglue and the locks or no?”
Instead of answering right away, Gillian appeared to take a deep breath before reluctantly saying: “If it’s interesting to you, yeah, go for it.”
The One Show host Alex continued to press before Gillian eventually caved and retold the story,
The tense clash didn’t go unnoticed by several fans who branded the entire interview “awkward’ and even left one fan “turning off”.
Several fans were left shocked to see Gillian walk off the set before the show had even ended.
Before the credits began to roll following Alex and Matt’s goodbyes, Gillian stood up and readied herself to leave.
It prompted one fan to joke: “She even just had to stop herself stretching as SHE STOOD UP FROM SOFA before cut!!!!! Gillian Anderson was the British version of the Meg Ryan interview..!! #theoneshow.”
While a second added: “#GillianAnderson couldn’t wait to leave #TheOneShow.”
The One Show continues every weeknight at 7pm on BBC One.
