Singer Anne Marie issues mortified apology after appearing in TV sketch in which Ant & Dec brandished Japan's BANNED Rising Sun flag symbolising rape, slavery and mass-murder
- The singer, 28, was unaware of the connotations of the Rising Sun flag and its links to Japan's history
- She posted to Twitter: 'I sincerely apologise to all those who were affected and hurt. I want you to know that i had nothing to do with the costumes'
- The symbol was used as WWII propaganda, championing the culture of war, militarisation, rape, sex-slavery, mass-murder and brutal Japanese colonialism
- Today, the flag is still used by right-wing ultranationalists, favouring the imperial state, and championing anti-Korean and anti-Chinese racism
- In another unfortunate twist, the performance fell on the same date as The March 1st Movement - the date Korea celebrate the resistance of Japanese rule
- ITV told MailOnline: 'We apologise for any offence caused. This was clearly unintended and we have taken steps to re-edit that part of the episode'
Singer Anne Marie has taken to social media to issue a grovelling apology after she took part in a live sketch on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway in which the presenting duo wore Rising Sun flags, symbolising the slaughter of 20 million people in Asia.
The Ciao Adios songstress, 28, appeared on the live show on Saturday evening on ITV, performing to the audience while Ant & Dec pranced around in the backdrop dressed in Japanese martial arts garb.
On their headbands was the Rising Sun symbol - which is a banned image, considered to be the Japanese version of Germany's Nazi Hakenkreuz, or Swastika.

Viewers were left outraged by the jovial use of the symbol, prompting the singer to post on Twitter on Sunday: 'I sincerely apologise to all those who were affected and hurt by my appearance last night on a UK TV [show].
'I want you to know that i had nothing to do with the costumes on this sketch.
'Unfortunately education on this part of the history wasn't done and I am also hurt by the pain this signifies for so many people.
'I am truly sorry and I promise you that this will not happen again.
Faux pas: The Ciao Adios songstress, 28, appeared on the live show on Saturday evening on ITV, performing to the audience while Ant & Dec pranced around in the backdrop dressed in Japanese martial arts garb
Bad taste: On their headbands was the Rising Sun symbol - which is a banned image, considered to be the Japanese version of Germany 's Nazi Hakenkreuz, or Swastika
'Offensive!' The symbol was used before and during World War II by Imperial Japan’s military, particularly the Imperial Japanese Navy
'Truly story!' Anne Marie insisted 'I am also hurt by the pain this signifies for so many people'
'Our team is talking to the TV station, working on taking down the footage so that it does not cause any more pain [sic].'
MailOnline has approached ITV and Ant & Dec for comment.
ITV told MailOnline: 'We apologise for any offence caused during the End of the Show Show by the costumes worn. This was clearly unintended and we have taken steps to re-edit that part of the episode for the Hub and for repeat broadcasts.'
In another unfortunate twist, the performance fell on the same date as The March 1st Movement - one of the earliest public displays of Korean resistance during the rule of Korea by Japan from 1910 to 1945, which is celebrated still today.
This upset fans further; but, following Anne Marie's apology, her followers tweeted her to show their appreciation for her explanation.
'Thx for your apology, Anne Marie! ‘1st, March’ is so important day in korea. March 1, 1919, the day when the Korean people protested against Japanese colonial rule and announced the Korea's independence to all parts of the world. So i’m so angry for that pics [sic],' one person tweeted.
Another posted: 'Thank you for apologizing for that, and I'm glad you mentioned it without condoning it. I hope this never happens again. From Korean fans cheering for Anne-Marie Smiling face with smiling eyes [sic].'
A third typed: 'The rising sun flag signifies the most painful era of korean history during ww2, and I am thankful that you addressed the problem quickly. Love you as always xxx [sic].'
'I fully understand your mind. I wish you are ok. And I hope to see you in Korea soon. Take care of your health and love you xx [sic],' wrote another.
Another wrote: 'Hi, im big korean fan of you. I saw a picture of you laughing with people who wears symbol of Japapnese colonial era on there head. Yesterday was the anniversary of Korea's independence movement, so I was even more hurt. But thank you for your quick feedback. I'm very thank for your apology. I'm glad you know about this now. l love u soo much! [sic]'
The symbol was used before and during World War II by Imperial Japan’s military, particularly the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Slammed: Viewers were left outraged by the jovial use of the symbol
What it means: A Twitter user posted information about what the symbol means
The symbol was used as propaganda, championing the culture of war. The flags were carried by soldiers and were raised when enemy territories fell to Japanese forces, championing war crimes and militarisation, also raised when soldiers committed rapes and murder.
The flag is used in Korea as a reminder of Japanese colonialism - when Japan ruled with force, sending Korean men to battle, using tens of thousands of young women as Comfort Women, AKA sex slaves.
Today, the flag is still used by right-wing ultranationalists, favouring the imperial state and remilitarisation, and championing anti-Korean and anti-Chinese racism.
Apology accepted: Fans rushed to thank Anne Marie for explaining the error
