Doctor Who's big twist fits into the show's history perfectly - digitalspy.com

Note: Doctor Who season 12 finale 'The Timeless Children' spoilers follow

Doctor Who has changed its history completely, finally revealing who the Doctor really is and why she is so special.

For some, this change of lore is hard to get their heads around. Everything we thought we knew about the Doctor and the Time Lords for the past 57 years has been a lie. But while it may seem like a clumsy and unnecessary retcon, the new lore actually fits into the show's history perfectly (well – almost perfectly) and leaves a host of exciting threads to expand on.

'The Timeless Children' revealed some huge secrets, including the news that the Doctor isn't actually from Gallifrey. In the long-awaited plot reveal, the Master showed us that the Doctor was found as a child by an indigenous Gallifreyan named Tecteun. Tecteun took the Doctor in, only to later discover her regenerative powers.

To add to this shocking change of history, it turns out that the Doctor's adoptive mother experimented on her, forcing her into regeneration after regeneration until Tecteun finally worked out how to splice the powers into her fellow Gallifreyans, resulting in the creation of the Time Lords.

This means that after all these years of thinking that the Doctor was just different to her fellow Time Lords because of her lust for adventure, she was actually the reason for their existence.

This background explains every aspect of what we already know about the character: if the Doctor was abandoned, brought to Gallifrey and exploited by her adopted parent, there is a whole history of trauma and pain that could be the reason they are who they are.

Some have argued that the 'chosen one' storyline takes away from the Doctor being an ordinary character who just wanted to see more of the universe, that anyone could be the same hero.

But by bringing in the history of her horrific past, it make her more relateable. The reveal that the Time Lords lied to her proves entirely why she never felt at home on Gallifrey and why she stole a box and ran away. It shows us that we can move forward and do incredible things, despite our experiences. It's proof that the Doctor is even more of a hero than we once thought.

Along with making the Doctor the origin of the Time Lords, it was revealed that there is no limit to the number of times she can regenerate. The matrix showed us that the 12-regeneration rule was put in place by Tecteun during the creation of the Time Lords as we now know them.

This is a huge revelation that opens the door to endless Doctors and opportunities for the future of the show. It explains how Jo Martin's Doctor fits into the narrative and how a relatively obscure plot hole, the "Morbius Doctors", were in fact canon incarnations.

This new chapter of lore validates all of the possible Doctors we've never been sure are canon as well as creating a whole world of history we don't know about. This is rewarding and exciting, especially when it fits in so well with what we've already seen. Everything we knew about the Doctor was just blown apart and opened into an even bigger universe of stories, adding even more longevity to the show.

Now we know why the Time Lords have always monitored the Doctor and hated her meddling throughout space and time. What if she found out the truth?

The new story also explains why the Master hates the Doctor so much and gives a new lease of life to a villain who we now know only exists because of her. Everything seems to have come together with these new plot details.

None of the changes introduced in season 12 ruin what has come before, nor do they take away from the show as we've always known it. It only adds to the expansive universe and creates more mystery around our hero.

The show has survived so long because of its baked-in capacity to change and, yes, regenerate. This new set of revelations is no different. Opening up the possibility of many more incarnations of the Doctor and a new history to delve into has refreshed the world of Doctor Who after 57 years – and it's exactly what it needed to keep us asking 'Who?'

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
