Coronation Street and Emmerdale stop filming TODAY as coronavirus fears tear through ITV - Express

The moves, announced yesterday, have been widely welcomed by stars, including mum-of-three Sally Dynevor, 56, who plays Sally Metcalfe in Coronation Street. She told the Daily Express: "We are all very relieved this decision has been made."

Coronation Street and Emmerdale, which are watched by around six-and-a half million people each week, have recorded enough episodes in advance to keep them on TV until the early summer.

But like the BBC, which said its soap EastEnders would be shown fewer times each week to make the pre-recorded episodes last longer, ITV is also changing its schedules.

It is understood Coronation Street and Emmerdale will remain on air this week as normal, apart from on Friday.

Then from next Monday, Coronation Street will be on three times a week and Emmerdale five – down from six for both.

If the crisis drags on, the telly staples could be off air for months.

ITV also revealed that on weekday mornings: “We'll be running an extended version of Good Morning Britain from 6am until 10am.

"At 9am Lorraine Kelly will join Piers Morgan in the GMB studio for the last hour and hand straight over to the This Morning studio with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby as usual running from 10am until 12.30pm.

"We will then run some of our favourite repeat episodes of Loose Women from 12.30pm to 1.30pm to give viewers something to smile about each day at lunchtime."

Of the decision to suspend filming of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, ITV said: "We've been doing our best to carry on filming, whilst adhering to the Government's latest health guidelines, to ensure we have episodes of both soaps airing until at least the early summer.

"However, the health and wellbeing of the production teams, actors, crew and their families is of paramount importance to us, and we now feel that the time has come to stop filming. We'd like to thank our viewers for their support and hope they continue to enjoy both soaps in the coming months."

Last week, the BBC suspended filming of EastEnders and other dramas including Casualty, Doctors, Holby City, River City andWelsh series Pobol y Cwm.

EastEnders will be shown twice a week instead of four times to make the pre-recorded shows last as long as possible.

Meanwhile Radio 4 is broadcasting five episodes of The Archers each week instead of six until the end of April.

The station has also commissioned several series about the pandemic and will air its usual news programmes along with archived comedy and drama shows.

Among them will be episodes of I'm Sorry I Haven'tA Clue and Just A Minute as a tribute to Nicholas Parsons, who died in January at 96.

His widow Annie said: "I am certain he would be delighted to think that his shows were helping to keep the nation's spirits up."
