Daniel Radcliffe has recalled how his drinking spiralled during his final days of filming Harry Potter to cope with the blockbuster franchise coming to an end.
The 30-year-old actor shot to fame playing the iconic boy wizard in the Harry Potter movies from the age of 11 in 2000.
After eight successful movies, the franchise wrapped up in 2011 shortly after Daniel decided to give up alcohol and go sober.
Opening up about his struggles with drinking, the actor said on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs: ‘I definitely think a lot of the drinking that happened towards the end of Potter, and for a little bit after it finished, it was panic and not knowing what to do next, and not being comfortable enough in who I was to remain sober.’
Daniel went on to explain that it was ‘weird’ to realise that he had to quit drinking at such a young age but was ‘very, very happy’ once he did.

‘But I will always be fascinated and frustrated by the question of: is this something that would have happened anyway or was this to do with Potter?’ he continued.
‘I will never know. It runs in my family, generations back. Definitely not my mum and dad, I hasten to add.’
These days, Daniel is alcohol-free and in good health despite what recent reports claimed.
The Escape From Pretoria actor was falsely rumoured to have contracted coronavirus last week after a fake BBC News tweet circulated on social media.
Addressing the viral hoax, Daniel said in an interview with Australian radio show Smallzy’s Surgery: ‘I walked into the hair and make-up room on a play yesterday, and the make-up artist was like, “My niece has just texted me and told me you’ve got corona”.
‘I think it was on a fake BBC account, but then enough people saw it… That is the Internet.’
He then joked: ‘I think it’s just because I look ill all the time, so you can believably say it about me. ‘Cause I’m very pale. But, you know, flattered they chose me.’
