Doctor Who's major reveal confirms a 44-year-old fan theory - digitalspy.com

Note: This article contains major spoilers for Doctor Who season 12 episode 10.

The Doctor Who season 12 finale has just confirmed a 44-year-old fan theory.

In the dramatic tenth episode, it was revealed that The Doctor isn't actually a native of Gallifrey, meaning she isn't a Time Lord after all. Instead, she is the mysterious being known as The Timeless Child, whose origins remain unknown.

Alongside this canon-altering bombshell, it was also revealed that The Doctor is actually the only being capable of regenerating, and the Time Lords only picked up the ability as a result of splicing her DNA with theirs.

Jodie Whittaker's Doctor then learns that there were actually many, many incarnations of herself that she didn't know about, stretching way before the supposed first Doctor William Hartnell.

While a large portion of fans appear to be unhappy with the reveal, with many suggesting it's ruined almost five decades of Doctor Who lore, this plot line may actually have been alluded to in the 1976 episode 'The Brain of Morbius'.

In the episode, Tom Baker's Doctor comes up against a Time Lord criminal called Morbius, with both of them being hooked up to a machine that allows them to have a literal battle of wits.

In the process, The Doctor saw all of his previous incarnations – but it didn't stop there as viewers were shown eight more unknown faces.

At the time, viewers suspected that these other individuals must have been previous incarnations of Morbius, but the producers did actually confirm that these were pre-Hartnell versions of The Doctor.

Speaking to Lance Parkin, author of the 1996 book Doctor Who: A History of the Universe, producer Philip Hinchcliffe revealed: "It is true to say that I attempted to imply that William Hartnell was not the first Doctor.

"We tried to get famous actors for the faces of the Doctor, but because no one would volunteer, we had to use backroom boys."

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
