The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posted four pictures on Twitter and Instagram, including a previously unseen photo of Prince George and Princess Charlotte. And they shared a picture of Princess Diana with a young William and Prince Harry.

The final image is of George’s adorable Mother’s Day card to Kate.

George's colourful collage made of card, paint and tissue paper shows a yellow vase with three red flowers.

One more said: “Oh! This is truly beautiful. Happy Mother's Day all!

“Thank you @KensingtonRoyal. We needed this ray of sunshine during this hard gloomy time.”

It comes after William and Kate visited an NHS 111 call centre in Croydon, south London, on Thursday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Royal Family marked Mother’s Day by sharing a black and white image of the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, with her mother, Queen Elizabeth.

The picture was taken in 1951 and they are holding on to their hats as they arrive at Westminster Abbey for a wedding.

A message on Instagram said: "Mothering Sunday is a chance to thank and celebrate all mothers and caregivers, wherever they may be.

"Today may be a different and difficult day for those who would usually plan to spend time with their mothers, as we adapt to the necessary changes and disruption to our normal routine and regular patterns of life.

"But for all Mums everywhere, we are thinking of you, and wish you all a very special #mothersday."

Prince Charles and Camilla also wished people a Happy Mother's Day "particularly in a year when families may not be able to be together".

They posted a picture of a young Charles playing in the Clarence House garden in 1950.
