Reason behind Caroline Flack’s suicide ‘may never be known’, says ‘devastated’ ITV boss - The Sun

THE boss of ITV has described the death of Caroline Flack as "unbelievably tragic" and said the reason behind her suicide may never be known.

Dame Carolyn McCall spoke at a conference in London where she addressed the death of the former Love Island host, who took her own life last month aged 40.

The broadcasting chief said ITV staff had been "absolutely devastated" by the news.

She told Enders and Deloitte's Media And Telecoms 2020 And Beyond conference: "The thing about Caroline Flack is that ITV are absolutely devastated by what happened to her.

"So many people at ITV knew Caroline, including me, and it was unbelievably tragic.

TRAGIC DEATH

"I think that we can never know what is behind suicide. It is not in any way simple. It is a very, very complex thing.

"We take advice from (mental health charities) Samaritans and Mind and we will continue to do that."

Flack killed herself a day after she had learned that the CPS was pursuing charges that she allegedly attacked her boyfriend Lewis Burton, 27, with a lamp.

She pleaded not guilty to assault by beating, but found out the day before her death that prosecutors had decided to move forward with the case.

I think that we can never know what is behind suicide. It is not in any way simple. It is a very, very complex thing.

Dame Carolyn McCall

The popular TV host had strongly denied the charge and her family and management slammed the CPS for pursuing the case branding it a "show trial".

Lewis, who suffered a minor head injury during the incident at her North London home, has always insisted he "never supported" a prosecution.

He also said Caroline had become the subject of a "witch hunt".

Yesterday, the police watchdog ruled they will not investigate the contact between Flack and the Met Police before her death.

"WITCH HUNT"

The Independent Office for Police Conduct stated there was "no indication of a causal link" between the actions of police and Flack before her death.

Dame Carolyn later reaffirmed her channel's commitment to duty of care, highlighting its work with Dr Paul Litchfield.

The deaths of former Love Island contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, and The Jeremy Kyle Show guest Steve Dymond, prompted increased scrutiny on ITV over its aftercare.

Dame Carolyn added: "As far as duty of care is concerned, we are absolutely focused on making sure our duty of care is, for both our participants and for our talent, world class.

“We want to be best in class for that.

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.

It doesn't discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society - from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It's the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it's rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You're Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let's all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others... You're Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

"I think because we reviewed Love Island last summer, so a few months before last summer's series, Paul Litchfield, who is the former CMO, works with us, and he made a whole load of recommendations which we have implemented, which is about aftercare, which is about casting, which is about a whole range of things - financial management, social media management.

"Social media is the thing that has gone absolutely ballistic. It has actually only happened in the last three years, because in the first two years (Love Island) was too small.

"It wasn't really a successful programme. It has only really made a big difference in the regionals three years ago on social media.

"We take that very serious and we are actually working with the industry on how we can share all of that and how we can learn and pool our resources, so we can learn from each other. So that is what we are doing."
