WHAT do Simon Cowell, Gregg Wallace and Huw Edwards all have in common?
They have all had a midlife makeover — with gym routines, spray tans and pearly white veneers.
Music mogul Simon, 60, even went vegan and cut back on alcohol, losing a stone and a half in weight. Fans were shocked at the transformation, but one woman has seen it all before.
Cara French, 45, watched as chain-smoking, take-away-loving partner Neil Coates, 46, change into a vegan gym-lover and self-tanning hunk.
Lab technician Cara, from Rhyl, Denbighshire, says: “Neil and I met at a party nine years ago. He was working as a firefighter, doing 12-hour shifts.
“He loved his food and had takeaways at least four times a week. And at weekends we enjoyed long lie-ins and going out for a curry.”
But three years ago, Neil began to think about ageing after a few friends turned 50.
Cara says: “He was smoking up to 30 cigarettes a day, drinking alcohol and putting on weight.
“He weighed 13st and didn’t want to be fat when he turned 50.
“I thought it was great he wanted to be healthy, but when he signed up for a gym membership, I had no idea it was about to become his second home.
'Banned sugars'
“Instead of sleeping in with a cuddle, he was up at 5am for a two-hour workout six-days-a-week.
“Soon he started coming home later, too, fitting in a cardio class after work.
“I thought it was just a phase, and joked he was having an affair with the gym. But it never stopped.”
A few months later, Neil turned his health and fitness obsession to food.
Cara says: “I came home one day and he’d done a clean sweep of the kitchen cupboards. Out went treats, he banned sugars and carbs and dairy were out.
“I had to have a small section of the fridge for my stuff and hide anything he thought was unhealthy.”
“The weight dropped off him and, after a while, his muscles started to pop out.
“I don’t work out, don’t count calories and don’t spend much time worrying about my appearance.
“Here I was with a man who was getting a body better than any man I ever dated, even in my 20s.
“I sometimes eat the same food as him, but when it comes to swapping chips for quinoa and bulgar wheat, I draw the line.
“Don’t get me wrong, I really fancy his new body, but he doesn’t have a lot of time or energy to let me enjoy it, if you know what I mean.” Neil then turned his attention to other aspects of his appearance.
Cara says: “He started buying tailored shirts that showed off his figure. Then to highlight his muscles, he started getting full-body fake tans and whitening his teeth.
‘Posher creams than mine’
“He even started using posher face creams than mine, including cleansers and toners to give him a ‘healthier glow’.
"It can be frustrating having to give up our takeaway nights. I also miss having a relaxing time, as he’s always asleep before me and awake at the crack of dawn.
“Although I think it’s a bit crazy, I’m proud of him and he’s so much more confident now. He’s my very own Simon Cowell.”
Neil, who works in a supermarket and is preparing to become a personal trainer, says: “When I decided to lose some weight and get fit I didn’t expect to take it so far.
"Now I can’t imagine life without the gym, tans, diets and face creams.
"Blokes shouldn’t fall prey to middle age, you can turn things around if you want to.”
