Great British Bake Off 2019 winner: Fans outraged over Paul and Prue's final decision - Express

Great British Bake Off 2019 concluded tonight after a deceptively difficult Signature, a Technical which failed to rise and an optical illusion Showstopper which confused the judges brains vs tastebuds. Alice, David and Steph did everything they could to prove to Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood they deserved to be the winner of the tenth series. But it was David who emerged from the iconic tent and was crowned the winner, however, those watching at home didn’t agree with the judges decision and took to Twitter to comment.

Channel 4 viewers tuned in to see the three finalists create a chocolate cake, a soufflé and an optical illusion picnic basket for the grand finale tonight.

Steph, who was awarded the coveted Star Baker award four times in a row this series was under pressure to deliver.

Meanwhile, steady Alice who previously won two Star Baker awards and was known for producing refined and delicate bakes was distracted by the possibility her parents wouldn’t make it to see the result announced.

As for David, the “underdog,” he seemed to take everything in his cool, calm and collected stride, and because of this, he created exceptional bakes which impressed the judges so much he was named the GBBO 2019 winner.

Nevertheless, while many fans understood why David had been awarded the champion’s title, they couldn’t help but point out how “consistent” Steph had been throughout the competition, thus making her more deserved winner in their eyes.

Taking to social media to discuss, one said: “Erm Steph should have won #GBBO.”

“#GBBO slid in at the end & stole it… just smashed the final… Did he win it? Or did Steph lose it?” someone else remarked.

A third added: “How can David win? Totally unfair to the consistently amazing Steph!”

“I’m so gutted for Steph, I’ve taken to social media. This is the biggest scandal of 2019,” a fourth fan wrote.

“Not sure what happened to Steph today,” Paul remarked.

From the beginning of the episode, viewers saw Steph panic and crumble.

She let her whisk go awol and then over baked her chocolate sponge for her chocolate gateau cake, and used cold water for her bain marie instead of hot to cook her soufflés, which flopped out of the cases like soup, and then her burger cake lacked in flavour and picnic in finesse.

It was safe to safe the final wasn’t Steph’s proudest moment, nor showcased what she was really capable of.

Nevertheless, while many viewers were shocked to see David the winner, he was also surprised.

“For nine years I’ve been daydreaming about being on Bake Off,” David said following his victory.

“It wasn’t in my mind I would win this. I was always the underdog, this is just unreal.”

Congratulating him with a hug, Noel said: “Nailed it in the final!”

“Saved the best until last!” David replied.
