While fans gear up for a star-filled third season of The Crown, OG star Vanessa Kirby is looking back at the past two series to explain why a number of explicit scenes were cut.
The actress – who played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons – revealed that the royal dramatics were originally meant to be a lot more X-rated.
During a recent interview on the Love Stories podcast, Vanessa explained why the sex scenes were cut, saying: “There was a sex scene between Elizabeth and Philip in the first season. I think they were in South Africa filming, and they were like, ‘I just don’t think anyone wants to see the Queen having sex.’”
In other words, viewers were this close to seeing Claire Foy and Matt Smith’s characters getting it on in the House of Windsor. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
Another of the clips that made it to the cutting room floor saw Vanessa’s Princess Margaret and Matthew Goode’s Antony Armstrong-Jones getting freaky too, as well as one which involved “lots of different positions”.
"There was one (sex scene) written in The Crown, in episode seven of (season two). We had long discussions about what it should be, and it just became clear that to titillate was not the aim,” she added.
“With Margaret, I was like, 'no one wants to see royal boob, not really.’”
Although the creators decided against making the show too explicit, season three will delve into numerous love affairs. That includes Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret and her romance with landscape gardener Roddy Llewellyn (Harry Treadway) and Prince Charles’ (Josh O'Connor) relationship with Emerald Fennell’s Camilla.
Also joining in on the royal rump is none other than big screen darling Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, who recently revealed how predecessor Claire inspired her own take on the character.
"When Claire Foy handed over the mantle she was incredibly encouraging," she said. "She did the most exquisite job... For the first couple of weeks I copied everything she did and I tried to imagine how she'd do it, because I was such a fan."
The Crown returns on Sunday, November 17 on Netflix.
