Actress Anna Karina, once the muse of new wave director Jean-Luc Godard, has died aged 79.
The Danish-French star, who had been battling cancer, died in hospital in Paris, according to her agent.
French culture minister Franck Riester payed tribute on Twitter, writing: "She magnetised the whole world. Today, French cinema is orphaned. It has lost one of its legends."
Karina starred in films including The Little Soldier, A Woman Is A Woman and Pierrot le Fou.
She got her big break after being spotted by director Jean-Luc Godard, who asked her to audition for his debut feature film, Breathless.
Karina turned down the part when she discovered the role required nudity, but starred in his second film A Woman Is A Woman.
She married him in 1961 aged just 19, winning best actress at the Berlin Film Festival for the role just months later.
Her kohl-lined eyes, wispy fringe and individual sense of style quickly made her a fashion icon.
The high-profile couple were much photographed during the 1960s, and worked together on seven films during their four year marriage.
But despite their professional success, the relationship was said to be turbulent, and they divorced in 1965.
"He drove me a bit crazy," Karina told Vogue in 2016. "He would say he was going to buy some cigarettes and he would come back three weeks later."
Born Hanna Karin Bayer, she said she took the professional name Anna Karina on the advice of fashion designer Coco Chanel, whom she met at the start of her career.
Initially bought up by her grandparents in Denmark, she spent part of her childhood in foster care, before hitchhiking to Paris aged 17, following an argument with her mother.
While in the French capital, she was asked to do some test shots for an advertising company, which led to further work as a model.
In 1972 she set up her own production company, Raska, and began directing as well as acting.
Karina went on to marry and divorce three more times, to French actors Pierre Fabre and Daniel Duval, and American-born film director Dennis Berry.
Aside from acting, Karina also sang and wrote, recording two albums and writing four novels.
Her final role was in the 2008 musical road movie Victoria, which she also wrote and directed.
