Steps' H says BBC turned down same-sex partner years before Dancing on Ice - digitalspy.com

Ian 'H' Watkins has revealed just how far he has come in his journey to dance with a same-sex partner on Dancing on Ice.

The former Steps singer will make history on the 2020 series when he debuts on the ice with male professional partner Matt Evers, in a first for the ITV skating competition.

When he recently spoke to Digital Spy and other media, Ian revealed that this momentous step in telly history only happened after he'd been rejected by the BBC's short-lived gymnastics competition Tumble.

"When I suggested this [and we went] back-and-forth, back-and-forth, and we got the green light, I cried because it's so important to me," he remembered. "I did a show for the BBC seven years ago called Tumble, and I asked the BBC for a same-sex-partner and they said, 'No… We do not do this'.

"It shows how far we've come as people, and as the world. You know what? Let's change shit up. Let's change it. And if we're the ones to make a noise about it, let's do it."

Digital Spy has reached out to the BBC for a response.

Ian also chatted about the practicalities of dancing with a male partners, after Evers recently admitted that it posed some physical challenges.

"There are no rules in ice skating," he explained. "It doesn't say 'male and female'. Traditionally, on the show, a male has always had a female partner. [Evers is] used to skating a certain way.

"Now, he doesn't really know how it's working because will he take the lead? Will I take the lead? We're doing strong, dynamic, kind of, Cirque du Soleil lifts."

Dancing on Ice returns on Sunday, January 5.
