The future is obviously bicycle-based
I’m going to see the new Star Wars film over the Christmas holiday with my family and I am stoked.
Star Wars is so often a bellwether for technological change, having accurately predicted again and again the way our technological society would evolve.
Now we all communicate by hologram, fight with lightsabers and have our breakfast served by shiny, effete droids.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the last of the nine-movie Skywalker story arc and I am confident that, this time, we’ll finally get a glimpse of the utopian bicycle-based society that must be inevitable once good has triumphed over evil.
There are big questions I’m looking forward to having answered: will e-bikes be the dominant presence in the metropoles of the Resistance’s benevolent empire?
Will rider-first infrastructure increase participation among traditionally cycling-agnostic communities? Is 26in the ideal wheel size for an ewok bakfiets?
I’m not even going to consider the possibility that another science fiction portrayal of a highly advanced society will completely ignore the existence of bicycles.
It’s inconceivable that, faced with the clear advantages of bikes over machines that rely on repulsorlift to hover, George Lucas will satisfy the transportation needs of his characters via large, inefficient single-occupant vehicles.
Bicycles are the future; I will not be disappointed this time.
Happy Christmas from everyone at team BikeRadar! Here’s looking forward to a year of endless tailwinds and no new bottom bracket standards.
