JK Rowling sparked fury yesterday by backing a researcher sacked for tweeting that transgenders cannot change their biological sex.
The Harry Potter author, 54, tweeted: “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
“Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?”
She added #IStandWithMaya and #ThisIsNotADrill.
Maya Forstater lost her job in March after she posted controversial tweets questioning government proposals to allow people to self-identify their own gender.
On Wednesday Ms Forstater, formerly of the Centre for Global Development, had her case dismissed by an employment tribunal.
Many condemned author JK’s position, with some posting “JK Rowling is a Terf”.
A Terf is used to describe feminists who express ideas that other feminists consider to be transphobic — including the belief that trans women are not women.
But others supported Rowling, and joined her in using the hashtag #IStandWithMaya.
Representatives for Rowling were contacted for comment.
