No Time to Die trailer - who's in the white mask? - digitalspy.com

No Time to Die's first trailer might have revealed a major return in the form of Blofeld, but there is another mystery it's keeping under wraps.

Throughout the trailer, we get glimpses of a broken Phantom of the Opera-esque white Noh Mask. When we see someone wearing it, we can assume it's the baddie we know as Safin, as it's edited with some of Rami Malek's dialogue – but it might not be that simple.

At one point, the person wearing the mask appears to have suffered an injury (perhaps what led to the mask being broken in the first place).

We don't know yet if Safin has had some previous injury (à la Blofeld and his eye scar), although it seems like he might have some facial scarring. So there might not be any mystery, and actually be him.

But we don't know that for sure at this moment in time. And if it's not him, we have a theory as to who it actually is.

Back in March when No Time to Die was filming in Norway, we saw a dramatic chase scene being shot that saw a masked man, who appeared to be injured, pursuing a young girl across the snow and shooting at her.

The man was wearing a mask like the one we see in the trailer, and it could well be the exact one as it's broken in a similar way – or at least another Noh Mask that has been designed that way.

Another major revelation – alongside the Blofeld one – in the No Time to Die trailer is that Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) has a secret that could prove deadly for James Bond.

And what do we know about Swann from Spectre? She probably killed a man when she was 9 years old.

"A man once came to our house to kill my father. He didn't know I was upstairs playing in my bedroom. Or that papa kept a Beretta 9mm under the sink with the bleach," Swann tells Bond when explaining why she hates guns.

What if this chase scene is a flashback to this exact incident in Swann's childhood, and the assassin she (likely) killed was directly linked to Safin?

If the mask was Safin's (either because it's his or someone close to him), then it doesn't explain how it seems as though Swann is holding the mask in a box, although her emotional reaction could mean it's been sent to her.

Our guess: No Time to Die starts with Bond and Swann living happily ever after following the events of Spectre. Then in the cold open, her secret comes back to haunt her, splitting the pair apart and leading Bond to retire to Jamaica.

Whatever it is that Felix Leiter wants Bond's help with involves Safin and Blofeld (SPECTRE-related, most likely), leading to him teaming up with Swann again without realising that she's closely linked to everything that's gone on.

Cue Safin and the re-emergence of the white mask that has a link to Swann's past.

And some explosions, Martini drinking, one-liners and everything else we come to expect from a James Bond movie.

Bring it on.

No Time to Die has a UK release date of April 2, 2020, and opens in the US on April 10, 2020. All the previous Bond movies are available on DVD or Blu-ray.
