'One of Louis' first words was Mary,' Duchess of Cambridge reveals - Sky News

The Duchess of Cambridge has revealed that some of her youngest son's first words were inspired by TV chef Mary Berry - saying it is because he was exposed to her cookbooks.

Kate told the former Great British Bake Off judge about her one-year-old's first words in a new show, A Berry Royal Christmas.

She said: "One of Louis' first words was 'Mary', because right at his height are all my cooking books in the kitchen bookshelf.

"And children are really fascinated by faces, and your faces are all over your cooking books and he would say 'That's Mary Berry'... so he would definitely recognise you if he saw you today."

In the show, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge join Berry in the kitchen to cook festive food and prepare for a royal event to give thanks to those who work and volunteer over Christmas.

Berry calls the royal pair "remarkable" in the show, adding: "They don't just arrive and shake a few hands make a few smiles and a speech, they want to get involved, and they want to see what they can do."

Also in the show, Prince William says he tries to educate his children about issues that his late mother, Diana Princess of Wales, would have cared about, such as homelessness.

Alongside Berry, the duke visited a homelessness charity in London called The Passage, of which William is a royal patron, in the show.

He spoke to Berry about visiting the project as a boy for the first time, saying: "It was one of the first places I came to actually. I must have been between eight and 10, something like that. It had a profound impact on me.

"My mother knew what she was doing with it. She realised that it was very important when you grow up - especially in the life that we grew up - that you realise that life happens beyond palace walls, and that you see real people struggling with real issues.

"She liked to challenge the social norms about charities and about disadvantages and vulnerable people."

He added that he "absolutely" educates his children about these issues, saying: "On the school run... whenever we see someone who is sleeping rough on the street I talk about it and I point it out and I explain.

"And they are all very interested. They are like: 'Why can't they go home?'"

A Berry Royal Christmas airs on Monday 16 December at 8.30pm on BBC One.
