Prince Edward had been expected to attend the gala event at Buckingham palace on Tuesday evening along with his other siblings, Prince Charles and Princess Anne. The Earl of Wessex was not the only Royal Family member to miss the banquet. His wife, Sophie, had to skip the engagement due to prior work commitments.
Prince William is half way through a four day tour of the Middle East, where he is visiting the Gulf states of Kuwait and Oman.
And Meghan and Harry are enjoying some well earned down time after a hectic and eventful year.
Her Majesty hosted NATO and world leaders at the palace in order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the military alliance.
Among those she welcomed was US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
Photographs showed Her Majesty relaxed and smiling, while chatting to the US President.
This was Trump’s second visit to Buckingham Palace, after he attended another reception back in June during his state visit to the UK.
Charles and Camilla were also on hand to welcome the guests and later posted a statement to their Instagram account.
It read: “Tonight, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall attended a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by The Queen to mark 70 years of the NATO Alliance.

One wrote: “The Queen is pure class.”
Another commented: “Her majesty the Queen looks radiant as always but I must say Melania trump.style is on point in the dress/cape!”
While a third said: “After everything Queenie has been through she looks amazing!!”
A fourth enthused: “Incredible what Her Majesty does at her stage in life.”
Ahead of the reception, the US President and the First Lady met Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for afternoon tea at Clarence House.
Camilla wore a red dress teamed with a black jacket.
Melania looked stylish in a yellow cape coat from Maison Valentino’s A/W 2019 collection.
Charles and Camilla welcomed the US President and his wife and posed for pictures before moving to private quarters for tea.
Charles also met other NATO leaders earlier, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
