STRICTLY star Kevin Clifton threatened to quit the BBC series a year ago but was persuaded to stay.
The pro dancer, 37, shocked millions of fans on Friday by revealing he had danced on the show for the last time.
But sources last night told how Kevin had planned to leave on a high after lifting the glitterball trophy with his now-girlfriend Stacey Dooley, 32, in 2018.
He agreed to stay on only after being talked into it by show bosses.
And sources say he has told pals he regrets his decision after he was paired with TV star Anneka Rice and voted out of the contest in week three.
The crash-out, which came after he turned down lucrative theatre projects, was said to have left him livid.
He has told show pals that he wanted to make sure he was paired with a more likely-to-win celebrity if he stayed on this year.
Kevin is also understood to have clashed with producers who asked him to invite girlfriend Stacey to his rehearsals with Anneka, 61, so they could be filmed for a clip.
The source said: “Kevin was flooded with lucrative offers after he won Strictly with Stacey in 2018 and he told bosses then that he wanted to walk away.
“He only earns around £45,000 for the show and yet he could pick up £100,000 for a year-long theatre gig.
“His head was turned by the money. But he was talked into coming back with a lot of flattery about ‘King Kev’ being the most-loved pro dancer on the show.
“He hoped to follow his and Stacey’s win with more success. Instead he was paired with Anneka, who — lovely as she is — was never going to the final.”
Pals say he has been kicking himself all year, saying he should have followed the example of sister Joanne, 36, and quit while he was ahead.
Joanne — who left the show in 2016 after winning the trophy with TV presenter Ore Oduba — has gone on to West End career success.
And Kevin is now desperate to carve out a similar future for himself, with the backing of TV documentary-maker Stacey, who is said to have encouraged him to make the break.
The Sun revealed yesterday that the pair want to be a “TV power couple”.
Announcing his departure on Friday, he said: “I am grateful to the BBC and Strictly Come Dancing for giving me the opportunity to have been a part of something truly special.”
