Our Girl star Michelle Keegan says she'd "love" to do a period drama - digitalspy.com

Our Girl and Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan has discussed the surprising kind of role she'd "love" to play in the future.

In conversation with The Sun recently, she spoke of her determination to avoid the acting pigeonhole - so would she consider auditioning for the next Downton Abbey project, just to show everyone what she's capable of?

"Would I be upstairs or downstairs?" she responded. "You know what, I don't mind, but anything that pushes me as an actor and changes people's perception to say, 'Oh I didn't expect her to do that', would be really good.

"I mean, I've never felt that prejudice, but people might say it behind my back. I'd want to do it anyway — for me, as a challenge to myself."

Michelle further explained: "I would love to do a period drama, not just because I'm really interested in history, but because I've never done a period piece before.

"I'd totally immerse myself in the role — and, yes, I can do a posh accent... but I'm not gonna do it for you right now."

This isn't the first time she's expressed an interest in joining a costume drama either, as back in 2014, Michelle confessed that she's "always wanted to play Henry VIII's wife."

Our Girl will return to BBC One for six more episodes beginning Tuesday, March 24 at 9pm.
