Crews used fireboats to douse the blaze, which could be seen from as far away as downtown Miami according to Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll.

The damage caused the boat to gradually capsize, with footage from WSVN 7 News showing at least a third of the yacht submerged during the operation.

Ata Bayrakrtar, a family member of the Island Gardens Marina's owner, told the channel that the situation was bad for everyone.

More from Jennifer Lopez

Bayrakrtar said: "It's a sad day. For us, as the marina and for the boat. Firstly, it's important for people's lives, but obviously then for the boat."

The yacht called Andiamo (Italian for "here we go") is understood to be unsalvageable.

It had five cabins and slept 12 people according to TMZ, who valued it at around $7m (£5.4m).

It apparently boasted features including a BBQ, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, a Jacuzzi and docking stations for multiple jet skis.

A photo posted on Twitter by Anthony last year shows him relaxing in the yacht's Jacuzzi with friends, with the nightlights of Miami in the background.

Jennifer Lopez's ex-husband is said to have put the yacht on sale earlier this year, although it is still understood to belong to him.
