Queen Elizabeth II arrived at Sandringham today after putting off her Christmas break following the general election. After attending the State Opening of Parliament on Thursday the Queen was finally free to take her annual train journey from King’s Cross to King’s Lynn, Norfolk today.
Shortly after the Queen’s safe arrival in Norfolk, it was announced her husband Prince Philip, 98, had left his retirement base at Wood Farm, Sandringham to travel to King Edward VII’s hospital in London.
Buckingham Palace has said Philip’s admission to hospital in the capital was pre-planned and a “precautionary” measure for a “pre-existing condition.”
While it may seem odd Philip and the Queen made opposite journeys today and are apart so close to Christmas, the decision would not have been made without good reason.
A Buckingham Palace statement about the Duke of Edinburgh’s hospital admission read: “The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition.
“The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor.”
Buckingham Palace has not confirmed what illness the Duke is being treated for but has been keen to emphasise it is not a health emergency and that he wasn’t taken there by ambulance.
The Queen’s decision to leave London on the same day Prince Philip was hospitalised there was most likely informed by the fact she had already delayed her trip to Sandringham and could not put it off any longer.
The Queen looked striking in a pale pink coat and a silk headscarf as she stepped off the train in Norfolk this morning.
Prince Philip spends most of his time in Norfolk since his retirement from public duty in 2017 and is said to enjoy painting and going for walks.
Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex and Zara Tindall and Mike have also been regulars at royal Christmases over the years.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will spend there first Christmas as parents elsewhere.
They are currently enjoying a break way from the royal bubble with their eight-month-old son Archie Harrison.
The Sussexes confirmed they will spend Christmas with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.
