Star Wars Last Jedi director defends treatment of Luke Skywalker - digitalspy.com

With the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans are once again taking the opportunity to lament the previous instalment, The Last Jedi.

The Rise of Skywalker has received a mixed reaction from cinemagoers and critics, but some feel director JJ Abrams always had an insurmountable challenge in bringing the saga to a coherent conclusion, due to some of the moves made by Rian Johnson in TLJ.

His portrayal of Luke Skywalker in particular was something that many took issue with – and still do.

Recently, after one fan on Twitter accused Johnson of 'completely destroying' Luke's character – primarily because he depicts him as a fearful recluse who turned his back on his friends and family, and even considered murdering his own nephew – the director fired back in self-defence.

"I understand that point of view but I completely disagree with it," replied Johnson. "In fact I think it disrespects the character of Luke by treating him not as a true mythic hero overcoming recurring wounds & flaws, but as a video game character who has achieved a binary, permanent power-up."

The fanbase shall forever remain divided on the matter.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in cinemas now.
