REVEALED: Zoe Kravitz was told she was 'too urban' to play Catwoman in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises... before being cast in role for The Batman
She landed the coveted role of Catwoman in The Batman opposite Robert Pattinson as the iconic caped crusader.
But Zoë Kravitz was less lucky when she tried to audition for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which featured Anne Hathaway as the conflicted cat burglar.
The 30–year–old Big Little Lies star claimed in a 2015 Nylon interview that she was prevented from auditioning for the movie because she was too 'urban.'
Changing times: Despite being announced as Catwoman in the upcoming film The Batman, Zoë Kravitz, 30, was reportedly told she was too 'urban' to audition for The Dark Knight Rises (2012), according to a 2015 Nylon interview; pictured in May
Zoë was convinced that she had lost out on a chance to appear in the blockbuster Batman film, which starred Christian Bale as the title hero.
'In the last Batman movie [The Dark Knight Rises], they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t "going urban,"' she explained.
'It was like, "What does that have to do with anything?" I have to play the role like, "Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?"'
The High Fidelity star didn't specify in the interview who stood in her way when it came to auditioning or what role they held in the process.
Shut out: 'In [The Dark Knight Rises], they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t "going urban,"' she explained
Standing up for herself: 'It was like, "What does that have to do with anything?" I have to play the role like, "Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?"'; a still from X-Men: First Class
Though they only used the term 'urban' when preventing her from auditioning, the term is often used as a euphemism for race.
Though she benefited from her famous name and celebrity parents Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, she was far from a household name during The Dark Knight Rises casting period.
She was previously featured in a small roles in 2007's The Brave One with Jodie Foster and had appeared in other minor roles, but her breakout performance in X-Men: First Class (2011) was still ahead of her.
Deja vu: Halle Berry starred in her own Catwoman spinoff movie opposite Sharon Stone in 2004
Since then, Zoë has gone on to play one of the leads on HBO's acclaimed Big Little Lies and was featured in the Harry Potter spin-off series Fantastic Beasts, among other high-profile gigs.
Though she admitted in the 2015 interview that her celebrity parents have helped her secure an agent and get a foot in the door, she dismissed the idea that her parentage was a deciding factor in her biggest films.
'I’m hyper-aware that people are judging me based on who my parents are,' she admitted, though she attributed her role in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) to her talent alone.
'You book jobs like Mad Max because of you and not because of your dad. [Director] George Miller doesn’t f***ing care who my parents are,' she said.
Tough kitty: Anne Hathaway played the feline/Selina in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne
Zoë's new role as Catwoman puts her in the esteemed company of past actresses who have put on the black cat ears, including Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The 5ft2in star is no stranger to Catwoman: she already voiced the character in The Lego Batman Movie in 2017 which had Will Arnett as Batman.
Pre-production on The Batman begins in the summer of 2020 though there is no start date yet for filming.
Leather lady: Michelle Pfeiffer was a very sexy Catwoman in 1992's Batman Returns
Claws out: Eartha Kitt made for a very memorable Catwoman in the third season of Batman (1967). Before she was on the show, Julie Newmar had the part for two seasons
The movie is being directed by Matt Reeves and is from Warner Bros and DC Comics. Ben Affleck was supposed to star in and direct The Batman but he dropped out.
The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters June 25, 2021.
Considering the women who have previously donned the claws, Zoë has big paws to fill.
Julie Newmar, who is now 85, played Catwoman during the first two seasons of TV's Batman in the 1960s.

Past perfect: She nailed a Catwoman look when starring in X-Men - First Class in 2011
Zoë got her start in the 2007 film No Reservations starring Catherine Zeta-Jones. Next came The Brave One and then she stood out in Jay-Z's video for I Know.
But it wasn't until she co-starred with David Duchovny in the TV series Californication that she got noticed.
Next came a sexy role as a dancer and mutant in X-Men: First Class in 2011 and parts in After Earth and the Divergent series.
The year 2015 was a big change for her when she landed a role in Mad Max: Fury Road.

It wasn't until 2017, however, that she became a well-known name. That year she starred with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies for HBO as the spacey, depressed yoga instructor wife of Reese's ex.
She was also in the sequel with Meryl Streep.
In 2018 she talked fame with Elle: 'If I don't have [the next] job lined up, I get nervous,' she said. 'It's irrational, maybe. But also good. When I was in high school, if a girl didn't like me, the first thing she'd say was, 'You think you're so cool because of your parents.' That carries into later life, like, 'Oh, you just got this part because your parents are this and that,' she added.
'It's important to acknowledge that I got in the door easier because of them. Some kids work their whole lives and they can't even get an agent to call them back. That part was handed to me. People are always going to think that maybe you are who you are because of your family. So it's my responsibility to work harder.'
Zoë married actor Karl Glusman, 31, in June at the home of her rocker father Lenny, 55, in Paris.
Karl and Zoë have been in a relationship since 2016 and got engaged in February 2018.
