Ant and Dec announce plans for BBC show Street Car Showdown weeks after the star returns to the road following his ban for drink-driving

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have announced plans for a new TV show, Street Car Showdown, on BBC Two.

The news comes just months after Ant returned to the road in July following his 20-month ban, which was reduced to 15, after pleading guilty to drink-driving in April 2018.

Ant and Dec's Street Car Showdown, which focuses on the presenters' childhood fascination with car modders, will pilot on BBC Two and sees teams convert second-hand cars into racing machines.

The opposing contestants will have just ten days and a small budget to transform the used vehicles into souped-up motors.

Talking about the show, Ant and Dec said in a statement: 'We have been fascinated with this world since we were teenagers in the North East and experienced car modders meeting up on Roker seafront in Sunderland to show off their creations.

'We came up with the format to shine a light onto the untapped world of car fanatics and highlight their passion, talent and creativity.

'We are great admirers of the team at Studio Lambert and are thrilled to be partnering with them on this project.'

While Studio Lambert's chief executive, Stephen Lambert, added: 'We were delighted when Mitre asked us to work with them on developing Ant & Dec's fun, adrenalin-filled idea and producing it with them.'

Ant and Dec will be creative consultants on the new show but will not appear on it due to their contract with ITV, reports Variety.

Street Car Showdown will be produced by the two stars' company Mitre Television and Studio Lambert.

The TV star was banned and fined £86,000 after pleading guilty to driving a Mini while more than twice the legal limit in London in March 2018.

Magistrates handed him a 20-month ban, but it was reduced to 15 months after he completed a drink-driving referral course.

Ant has previously admitted he 'constantly relives' his drink-drive crash following the shocking incident last year. The TV presenter vowed he has been trying to become a better man.

During a joint interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Ant and the other half of his presenting double act Dec discussed the last 12 months since the crash.

He told the publication: 'I've constantly relived the incident. I know how serious that could have been and I am doing things on a daily basis to be a better man.

'I thank God every night that nobody was seriously hurt. I constantly think about it.'

Ant and Dec are set to return to television screens next month for I'm A Celebrity after the first trailer for the jungle series was released on Tuesday.
