Coronation Street's Katie McGlynn saw a counsellor after Sinead's death - digitalspy.com

Coronation Street aired heartbreaking scenes this week after Sinead Tinker tragically lost her battle with cancer.

And while fans were quick to praise Katie McGlynn’s performance during her final moments with partner Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), the star herself has admitted it took its toll on her mental health.

In conversation with The Mirror, the soap actress – who is leaving the show after six years – revealed that she had to see a counsellor to deal with the harrowing death of the young mum.

“It was like the storyline got embedded in my head – I couldn’t stop thinking about it and crying,” she told the publication, adding that she imagined seeing and hearing the character in real life.

“I was sitting on my sofa watching the programme in which Sinead is told she has weeks to live, and I started to cry.... I ended up going to see a counsellor who told me that I was mourning Sinead.

“A month later, I still feel like I’m really mourning her. It feels like waves of sadness coming over me. One minute I’ll be all right, then the next I’m in tears. It might sound weird, but to me Sinead has always been real.”

The actress went on to explain that she felt vulnerable, and so decided to get professional help, having three weekly sessions so far. It’s here that she realised that she’s grieving for the character, having stepped into her shoes for so long.

Katie’s counsellor has offered guidance to get her through the difficult time, suggesting to write a farewell letter to Sinead or spend a few days away to help her process everything that has happened. Thankfully, she’s on the mend, although she said she still suffers from “waves of grief”.

That said, Katie expressed pride for her reasons for insisting on the exit story – since Sinead’s storyline has unfolded, dozens of women have taken to social media to call for the age of cervical cancer screenings to be lowered.

“I’ve had emails from young women thanking me because they were too scared to get a smear until they watched Sinead’s battle. Some have had treatment for irregular cells and are thankful they went,” she said.

“Nurses have also sent me messages saying they have seen an increase in smear tests. It makes me so proud.”

Earlier this week, Katie took to social media to thank fans for their “overwhelming” support following the broadcast of Sinead’s final scenes, writing: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your amazing support and love.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
