El Camino - A Breaking Bad Movie first reviews - digitalspy.com

Note: this article contains spoilers for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

We might not have necessarily needed it, but Vince Gilligan has really delivered with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie its first reviews are almost perfect.

Taking place immediately after Jesse Pinkman's escape from the neo-Nazi compound – Walter White is officially dead and Jesse's now penniless – this movie spin-off provides a graceful yet violent swansong for Aaron Paul's baggy-jeaned crystal meth cook.

It was an uphill task for Gilligan, who writes and directs El Camino, but judging from the critical response, he's managed to pull off a worthy addition to the Breaking Bad universe.

Digital Spy

"Did we really need to see what happened next to Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman? Surely it was enough to know that he had escaped from the white supremacist gang, and we could just believe Jesse would be OK.

"We shouldn't have worried. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie might not fully escape the question of whether it's necessary but it's still a wonderful coda to the TV series and a showcase for Aaron Paul's supreme talent."

Rolling Stone

"As was the case on the original series (and on Saul), some of the action here is thrilling, some of it is horrifying, and some plain hilarious. And in El Camino's best moments, it's all of those things at the same time. (It will forever ruin an easy-listening radio staple, among other things).

"When you have Vince Gilligan operating near the peak of his powers, and taking the time to fix one of the few things the show didn't get quite right, it makes for one hell of an entertaining gift."

IndieWire

"Jesse isn't infallible — as always, Paul is more than capable of wordlessly communicating when Jesse knows he's made a mistake — but seeing the meticulous way he tackles these very specific objectives shows just how much he learned from his former partner in crime.

"Much of what makes this a success for both fans and agnostics is in how those pre-existing Breaking Bad characters join the fray. Every one of them is introduced off camera, which is Gilligan's way of giving diehards a chance to start puzzling out their arrival before everyone else gets to see them."

IGN

"Writer-director Vince Gilligan's memorable script explores Jesse's profound transformation with the use of well-placed flashbacks and cameos that don't feel forced for the sake of fan service. Aaron Paul delivers one of the best performances of his career, which should keep Breaking Bad's well-earned reputation as a television phenomenon alive and well for years to come."

But it wasn't all praise, with one publication finding glimpses of weakness in the movie and another asking why Gilligan even bothered to make it.

The Independent

"El Camino is constructed on the premise that being freed in the finale of Breaking Bad wasn't even halfway to freedom for Jesse. Flee the police, get the money, settle some scores, escape forever… the plot can't help but be focused on these basic drives.

"Gilligan works hard to keep things interesting, but shorn of Walter White's all-consuming hubris, El Camino's driving forces are too predictable. El Camino has many pleasures, but it's no Breaking Bad."

NME

"After five seasons of drama and trauma, the film no-one asked for adds a post-credits scene to an already perfect finale. It's not the first time something like this has happened, and it probably won't be the last. But the lesson is still the same: if you're thinking of making a sequel, a spin-off, an aftermath or whatever else it is – if it ain't broke, please do not try and fix it."

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is now available to watch on Netflix.
