Revealed: Why Meghan hugs palace staff and the public but refuses royal greeting - Express

The Duchess of Sussex is also known for handing out hugs to members of the public, especially children, while out and about on royal engagements. When Meghan first began dating Prince Harry, her friend Bonnie Hammer said she would hug staff at Kensington Palace. The TV executive recalled to Hello!: “I heard a story from her very early in their dating and Meghan would come up to the palace and she'd get out of the car and she'd have a bag or two.

“The guards would basically greet her and kind of walk her in.

“After the first couple of times I guess she started giving a hug to the guys, which wasn't exactly protocol and at some point somebody said to her, 'people don't usually do that' and she said while shrugging 'I'm American, I hug'."

There are no obligations or codes of behaviour when meeting the Queen or members of the Royal family.

The official royal family website states: “Many people wish to observe the traditional forms.”

The traditional greetings are a small bow for a man and a curtsy for a woman.

It comes as the Duchess had an awkward encounter while hugging a woman as Meghan stepped out for the One Young World Summit opening ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday night.

The event is a global forum for young leaders, bringing together 2,000 young people from over 190 countries across the world.

Meghan was met with cheers as she made her entrance where she insisted on a hug instead of a curtsy from founder Kate Robertson as she arrived on stage.

The royal crouched down on the pavement to say hello to nine-year-old Amira Nenguke, who had been waiting to meet her for over an hour.

Overcome with emotion at meeting her idol, the young girl burst into tears, after which onlookers saw Meghan then envelope her in a hug.

It didn’t stop there as Meghan hugged more fans waiting outside the Charity’s office.

Meghan declared to them: “Let’s have a group hug!”

Ms Nenguke told reporters: “I cried because I have never met such an amazing person like her, it was amazing to see.

“She means a lot to me and it was amazing to meet her.

“She’s such an independent woman, so strong and beautiful.”

Ms Nenguke claimed she had been a fan of Meghan’s since she watched the royal wedding last year.

Meghan proceeded to tell the young girl “you can be anything you want” after asking her what she wanted to be one day.
