Convicted paedophile Gary Glitter is reportedly set to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds in royalties from the new Joker movie.

Following the claims, movie-goers have expressed their disgust that the disgraced musician could rake in money from behind bars.

The new Joker movie, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic Batman character alongside Robert De Niro, has become a box office hit after grossing $234 million (£188 million) worldwide, including $93.5 million (£75.4 million) in the US last weekend.

But viewers were shocked that Glitter’s 1972 song, Rock and Roll Part 2, plays for around two minutes during a scene where the Joker is walking down a long flight of steps marking his transformation into the villain.

Glitter, 75, is currently serving a 16 year prison sentence for abusing three young girls and is due to be released in 2021.

The musician, real name Paul Gadd, served time in 2006 for molesting girls in Vietnam but was first jailed in 1999 after he was caught with images of child abuse.

In 2015, the disgraced British singer was found guilty for attempted rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and four counts of indecent assault.

According to The Sun, experts say Glitter will receive a lump sum for allowing the song to be used, while royalties are expected to be paid based on the film’s performance in cinemas, DVD sales and sales of the soundtrack.

Joker has smashed records with its box office earnings, becoming the highest-grossing movie with an October release in history.

Reacting to the claims, one movie fan tweeted: ‘Whose idea was it to play f*****g Gary Glitter in Joker [sic].’

Another furious Twitter user said: ‘There is no f*****g way they put gary glitter’s music in the new joker movie OHMY F*****G GOD THAT’S AN ACTUAL CONVICTED PEDOPHILE.’

Referring to Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins who was convicted of sex offences, another weighed in: ‘A bold choice to use Gary Glitter in JOKER. Were Lostprophets too expensive or…’

In 2013, it emerged Glitter had earned an estimated £1 million in royalties after Oasis sampled lyrics from his song Hello, Hello, I’m Back on their 1995 track Hello.

Joker sees Joaquin, 44, take on the titular role and depicts the iconic character as mentally ill.

Joker is out in UK cinemas now.
