Joaquin Phoenix Shows Up At Screening Of Joker - LADbible

Joaquin Phoenix has been receiving almost blanket praise for his performance in the new Joker film, but one lucky audience were shocked to see the man himself enter the room at a recent screening.

Apparently, he's been doing the rounds at a few LA cinemas, but on this occasion he actually apologised for crashing his own movie - how polite.

He can be seen entering the room, to the delight of the audience, before saying sorry. Of course, the audience are thrilled to have him there, shouting encouragement, to which he shyly points to one member of the aufience and jokes: "I can tell you're mad at me."

He then says that he hopes they all liked the movie, but not to tell him if they didn't. Thanking them for watching, he receives rapturous applause from his fans.

His performance in Joker has had people already certain he'll win an Oscar; it's been lauded as so dark and intense that people have reportedly been walking out - which I would say is a massive compliment to his acting.

However, some viewers weren't happy, one person even suggested that there should be a 'trigger warning' when it comes to people buying their tickets for the controversial film.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: "I've just walked out of the Joker. Maybe I was naive in going/didn't realise what an origin story would be like, maybe because I live with someone with MH [mental health], it was just far too dark for me to be able to watch."

However, the film has received rave reviews from many.

The Dark Knight - starring the late Heath Ledger as The Joker - has an impressive 9/10 rating from 2.1 million votes while Joker - which was released days ago - stands at an impressive 9.1/10 from over 115,000 votes.

We're well aware that there is a difference in the number voters, but it hones in on the fact that both movies have been and will continue to be a huge success. It doesn't come as much of a surprise to see why the film currently has a higher ranking than 2008's The Dark Knight.

Although Phoenix, a three-time Oscar nominated actor, has been heaped with praise by critics, his performance has also been the subject of some controversy by those who fear the dark violence could spark copycat crimes, according to The Sun.

It has been reported that police in the US will patrol cinemas to keep audiences safe after gunman James Holmes opened fire at a Colorado theatre in 2012 during a screening of Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 others.

On Friday a statement said: "The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of public concerns and the historical significance associated with the premiere of Joker.

"While there are no credible threats in the Los Angeles area, the department will maintain high visibility around theatres when it opens."
