Will Smith's Gemini Man is a box office bust facing losses of $75 million after lackluster opening in China
It's not been a good week for Will Smith.
Once one of Hollywood's biggest box office draws, the actor is facing up to the reality that his latest big screen venture Gemini Man is a major flop.
The sci-fi actioner helmed by Ang Lee is likely to bank a $75 million loss, according to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.
Flop: Will Smith's latest movie Gemini Man is a box office bust. The sci-fi actioner helmed by Ang Lee is likely to bank a $75 million loss, according to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday
The trade reported that the movie cost about $140 million to make and an additional $100 million was spent on marketing.
However, Gemini Man was a box office bust when it opened in North America a week ago, debuting with just $20 million.
It only grossed a paltry $8.5 million on its second weekend.
Pricey: In Gemini Man, Smith stars as an elite assassin who faces off against his younger self. It cost about $140 million to make and an additional $100 million was spent on marketing
Poor ticket sales: Smith promoted Gemini Man big time in Asia but it's global box office is just $118.7 million after coming in second behind Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in China this weekend
But there was optimism that the actor's fans in China would come out in droves to see the film when it opened there this weekend and offset the lack of ticket sales stateside.
But in a surprise turn of events, Gemini Man couldn't beat out Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and took in just $21 million behind Disney's Angelina Jolie starrer that opened with $22.4 million.
This brings its current global take to just $118.7 million, THR.com said.
In Gemini Man, Smith stars as an elite assassin who faces off against his younger self thanks to plenty of movie magic including groundbreaking de-aging effects and high frame rate technology designed for 3D screens.
But even two Smiths for the price of one clearly couldn't overcome the poor reviews the film received.
Still, Smith can still take comfort in the huge success of Aladdin earlier this year.
Disney's live action remake in which he starred as Genie was his best box office opening ever, raking in more than $1 billion worldwide.
Not impressed: Gemini Man, which was made using groundbreaking de-aging effects and high frame rate technology designed for 3D screens, struggled to overcome poor reviews
