Death in Paradise has announced that Ardal O'Hanlon will be leaving the show during the upcoming ninth series.
O'Hanlon has played DI Jack Mooney since 2017, taking over as the series lead from Kris Marshall. His exit will air early next year on BBC One, although story details have not been revealed.
"I've spent the last four summers in Guadeloupe playing DI Jack Mooney, solving over 20 murder cases in my time there!" he said. "It's been a hugely rewarding and unforgettable experience, working with incredibly talented actors, directors, and crew while discovering a magical part of the world.
"However, it's time to move on and explore other opportunities – preferably nearer the Arctic Circle.
"I'm confident that Death in Paradise will go from strength to strength, and viewers will share my enthusiasm for Jack's successor!"
The executive producer for the show's production company Red Planet Pictures offered a first hint about Mooney's departure, suggesting that it will be an emotional episode.
"We couldn't be more grateful for [O'Hanlon's] time as our lead detective, and his story isn't over yet," Tim Key said. "Viewers will have to see how, why, and when Jack Mooney leaves, but I don't think there will be a dry eye in the house."
Death in Paradise returns to BBC One in January 2020.
