A short promo for the episode shows Archie and his friends at the funeral as they lay red roses on Fred’s coffin.

Archie will receive the devastating news about his father while he’s chatting to Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) in Pop’s.

The high school senior will fall to the floor after getting the call about his father’s death.

Compared to the high drama that is usually the fare a Riverdale episode, In Memoriam will be a sedate affair.

Speaking about the tribute to the Beverly Hills 90210 star, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TV Line: “When Luke passed, we very quickly made the decision that we weren’t going to address it.”

He said that he didn’t want the story to be sandwiched in between the multitude of storylines at the end of season three.

The writer said it was “absolutely the right decision” to address Luke’s passing in season four.

Aguirre-Sacasa explained: “It kind of allowed us to absorb what happened, and really think about what kind of story we wanted to tell.”

He added: “We kind of knew this was going to be brutal on the cast, especially KJ [Apa], who was Luke’s main scene partner.”

The episode is also going feature Shannen Doherty, Luke’s co-star from Beverly Hills 90210.

Her character will be telling audiences what happened to Fred and will comfort Archie in the wake of his loss.

Aguirre-Sacasa previously told Entertainment Weekly: “A big piece of what happened to Fred comes to Archie through Shannen’s character.

“The scene is so heartbreaking because you really feel Shannen’s love for Luke.”
